Kids Against Drugs & Violence
(A program to combat drug use and violence among San Pedro’s Youth)
The San Pedro Alano Club is embarking on a program devoted to combating substance abuse and all forms of violence affecting teens in our community.
Recent studies show an alarming increase in drug and alcohol use by our youth starting at a younger age than ever before. Law enforcement agencies confirm that the level of violence impacting our kids has reached epidemic proportions. As every police officer, educator and knowledgeable medical professional will attest there is a direct correlation between substance abuse and violence in all its forms. We see a unified structured program that addresses both issues as the most promising method for combating a societal ‘virus’ that left neglected will eventually destroy the community in which we live and work.
Our goal is to help break the cycle of violence and substance abuse, beginning with our middle school students. The comprehensive program being implemented will involve hands on workshops dealing with the disease of addiction, recovery resources and options, domestic violence, dating abuse, bullying, health testing and screening, self defense training, alternative peer to peer dispute resolution, financial literacy and resume writing.
It is also our steadfast belief that kids must have fun. There are too few positive entertainment resources in Pedro for teens. We will be holding at least one Friday night dance each month for teens aged 15 to 18. These events will be planned by the students who will take responsibility for theme and musical selection, decoration, refreshments and promotion. The dances will be safe ,sober, drug free events where all are welcome regardless of race or sexual orientation. We are also planning a camping trip to the world renowned Joshua Tree Astronomy Center where students will have the opportunity to observe our universe unimpeded by city lights.
We all have much to be thankful for and the San Pedro Alano Club is committed to providing a safe, sober and nurturing place for all to gather, meet new friends, reconnect with old ones, take in a meeting and HAVE FUN!
